"We read to know we're not alone" - C . S Lewis
Reading - even the simplest sequences of words - has the power to deeply alter the way you think and feel, about things and situations, but also about yourself. Reading influences the way we understand the world and our position in it, and influences the way we deal with every single experience. From a personal point of view, I turn to literature and inspirational quotes when I'm dealing with something challenging, feeling emotional, lacking in confidence or lacking in motivation. One persons words can resonate so deeply with all kinds other people, in many different ways and during many different times. words can be interpretated in so many ways, and one single quote could console or calm different people in different situations. And it doesn't have to be an entire book, or even a paragraph. Sometimes, the shortest and simplest pieces of advice are the most valuable. I hope that some of the following of my favourite quotes are meaningful and worth something to you sometime. (Check regularly for updates + additions).
"Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling for more than it's worth"
"TO BE CALM IS THE HIGHEST ACHIEVMENT OF THE SELF"
"HAPPINESS IS A JOURNEY, NOT A DESTINATION"
"WE ALL HAVE TWO LIVES. THE SECOND ONE STARTS WHEN WE REALISE WE ONLY HAVE ONE" - TOM HIDDLESTON
"EMPTY YOURSELF AND LET THE UNIVERSE FILL YOU"
"DO WHAT YOU CAN WITH WHAT YOU'VE GOT"
"YOU ARE NOT STUCK"
"travel light, live light, spread the light, be the light"
"It’s dark because you are trying too hard.
Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly.
Yes, feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply.
Just lightly let things happen and lightly cope with them.
I was so preposterously serious in those days, such a humorless little prig.
Lightly, lightly – it’s the best advice ever given me.
When it comes to dying even. Nothing ponderous, or portentous, or emphatic.
No rhetoric, no tremolos,
no self conscious persona putting on its celebrated imitation of Christ or Little Nell.
And of course, no theology, no metaphysics.
Just the fact of dying and the fact of the clear light.
So throw away your baggage and go forward.
There are quicksands all about you, sucking at your feet,
trying to suck you down into fear and self-pity and despair.
That’s why you must walk so lightly.
Lightly my darling,
on tiptoes and no luggage,
not even a sponge bag,
"NOTHING IS REAL AND EVEYRHTING IS POSSIBLE"
"Every next level of your life will demand a different you".
"THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS TO LIVE YOUR LIFE. ONE IS AS THOUGH NOTHING IS A MIRACLE. THE OTHER IS AS THOUGH EVERYTHING IS A MIRACLE"
" WE ARE ALL A WORK IN PROGRESS"
"DON'T BE AFRAID OF DEATH, BE AFRAID OF A HALF LIVED LIFE"
"We get so messy. It's not that we are doing lots of wrong things, but, our mind is so messy, we don't keep it simple. And we end up making the lives that we're living, so inordinately complicated; completely unnecessarily. And it's such a shame, to end up feeling in a real muddle, while actually, you ought to be having the time of your lives".
BURGS - MT. WOLF
"YOU CAN'T STOP THE WAVES BUT YOU CAN LEARN TO SURF"
" W H E R E V E R Y O U G O , T H E R E Y O U A R E "
